Who he was

Zuph/Zophai Zuph, also called Zophai in 1 Chronicles 6:26, was a Levite of the Kohathite clan. He was an ancestor of Elkanah, the father of the prophet Samuel (1 Samuel 1:1). In the genealogy of the Kohathites, he is listed as the son of Elkanah and father of Toah (1 Chronicles 6:35). Zuph lived in the hill country of Ephraim, where his descendant Samuel was born (1 Samuel 1:1).
