Who he was

Kohath was the second son of Levi and grandson of Israel (or 'Jacob') (Genesis 46:11). He went to Egypt with Jacob's household (Genesis 46:11) and his descendants were counted in the census of Israel (Exo.6.16,18; Num.3.17,19). The Kohathites became one of the major clans of the Levites (Numbers 3:27). They were responsible for the care of the most holy things of the tabernacle (Numbers 3:29–31; 4.4,15). The Kohathites were given towns to live in among the tribes of Ephraim, Dan and Manasseh (Jos.21.5,20,26). Notable descendants of Kohath included Moses, Aaron, and the priestly line (Exo.6.18,20), as well as the musician Heman (1 Chronicles 6:33). The Kohathites remained faithful Levites throughout Israel's history (1 Chronicles 9:32; 2 Chronicles 20:19; 29.12; 34.12).
