How we know the date

All four count back from Solomon's Temple with the 480 years of 1 Kings 6:1, but start from different dates for the Temple; ISBE's chronology article argues for the 18th Dynasty (Thothmes III) as the age of the oppression. ISBE's Old Testament chronology (1915) gives 1448 BC; ISBE's article “Exodus, The” (1915) gives 1520 BC; Easton's (1897), under “Exodus” gives 1490 BC; Ussher's Annals (1650) gives 1491 BC (its year of the world 2513 b). The sources differ by 72 years; the year shown (1491 BC) is the one this timeline follows through this stretch, from Ussher's Annals (1650).

The sources, word for word

“In order to get the time limits of this period, it is necessary to count back 37 years from the end of Solomon's reign in 933 BC, and this brings us to that epoch-marking event, the laying of the foundations of the Temple in 969 or 970, the 4th year of his reign (1Ki 6:1); and from this event we are brought by the addition of the comprehensive number 479, given in the same verse, back to the year of the Exodus, approximately 1448 BC, making the total length of the period about 516 years.”

International Standard Bible Encyclopedia (1915) · CHRONOLOGY OF THE OLD TESTAMENT · gives 1448 BC

“We therefore find that Joshua's conquest is placed about 1480 BC, and the Exodus about 1520 BC.”

International Standard Bible Encyclopedia (1915) · EXODUS, THE · gives 1520 BC

“(Ex 12:51; Deut. 26:8; Ps 114; 136), about B.C. 1490, and four hundred and eighty years (1 Kings 6:1) before the building of Solomon’s temple.”

Easton's Bible Dictionary (1897) · EXODUS · gives 1490 BC

“2513. b. … Magis Pharaonis frustra sese opponentibus, Deus Mosis ministerio decem plagas A%gyptiis inflixit: quarum memoria in Psalmo septuagesimo octavo et centesimo quinto" celebratur.”

Ussher, Annales Veteris Testamenti (1650), Latin text in The Whole Works of James Ussher, vols. VIII–XI (Dublin, 1864) · vol. VIII, AM 2513 b · gives 1491 BC
