How we know the date ISBE counts the Passovers of John's Gospel from the first, which it dates AD 27, and so puts the crucifixion at the fourth, AD 30; it adds that Friday could have fallen on Nisan 14 or 15 that year, though the Jewish calendar was set by observation and such calculations stay uncertain, and that an early patristic tradition dates the death a year earlier. ISBE's New Testament chronology (1915) gives AD 30; ISBE's New Testament chronology (1915) gives AD 29. The sources differ by 1 year; the year shown (AD 30) is the one this timeline follows through this stretch, from ISBE (1915).
