Who they were

The Hivites were one of the Canaanite people groups that inhabited the land of Canaan prior to the Israelite conquest. They are first mentioned in Genesis 10:17 and 1 Chronicles 1:15 as descendants of Canaan, the son of Ham.

The Hivites lived in various parts of Canaan, including the region around Shechem (Genesis 34:2), the area near Mount Hermon (Joshua 11:3), and the cities of Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath-jearim (Jos.9.7, 17). They were among the tribes that God promised to drive out before the Israelites (Exo.3.8, 17; 13.5; 23.23, 28; 33.2; 34.11; Deu.7.1; 20.17; Joshua 3:10).

During the Israelite conquest of Canaan, the Hivites of Gibeon tricked Joshua into making a peace treaty with them.
