Who they were

Adar is the twelfth month of the Hebrew religious calendar, corresponding to February-March in the modern calendar. It is mentioned several times in the book of Esther in connection with the events leading up to the feast of Purim. Haman cast lots (Pur) in the month of Nisan to determine the day for the destruction of the Jews, and the lot fell on the thirteenth day of Adar (Est.3.7,13). However, through Esther's intervention, the king issued a new decree allowing the Jews to defend themselves, which they did on the thirteenth day of Adar (Est.8.12; 9:1). The Jews celebrated their victory over their enemies on the fourteenth and fifteenth days of Adar, which became the feast of Purim (Est.9.17-19,21). In leap years, an additional month called Adar II is added to the calendar to ensure that the religious festivals remain in their proper seasons.
