How we know the date ISBE places Malachi in the years of Ezra and Nehemiah but declines to fix a single year. ISBE's Old Testament chronology (1915) gives a range, 460 BC to 420 BC. None of them fixes a single year, so the event is placed by its order in the narrative within the range quoted.
