About this place
Ramoth, also known as Ramoth-gilead, Galeed, Ramah, Ramath-mizpeh, Mizpah, and Jegar-sahadutha, was an important city east of the Jordan River. It was designated as a city of refuge (Deu. 4:43; Jos. 20:8) and a Levitical city in the territory of Gad (Jos. 21:38; 1Ch. 6:80). Ramoth-gilead was the site of several battles between Israel and Aram (1Ki. 22; 2Ki. 8-9; 2Ch. 18; 22). It is also mentioned in the story of Israel (or 'Jacob') and Laban, who made a covenant there and named the place Galeed and Mizpah (Gen. 31:47-49). The exact location is uncertain, but it was likely an important fortress city in Gilead guarding a key trade route.
