Joel is mentioned in 1 Chronicles 5:4 as a descendant of Reuben, the firstborn son of Israel (or 'Jacob'). He is listed in the genealogical record of the tribe of Reuben as the son of Shemaiah and the father of Gog. This genealogy traces the lineage of the Reubenites, who settled east of the Jordan River.
