Who he was
Azariah heads the list of King Solomon's officials: “Azariah the son of Zadok, the priest” (1 Kings 4:2). He is taken to be the Azariah of the priestly genealogy, the son of Ahimaaz son of Zadok and the father of Johanan (1 Chronicles 6:8–9), “son of Zadok” meaning Zadok's descendant. He is distinct from his grandson of the same name, Azariah son of Johanan, who “executed the priest’s office in the house that Solomon built in Jerusalem” (1 Chronicles 6:10).
